Written and performed in the mid 1970s by the well known Iranian musician, composer and actor Fereydoun Foroughi, the song Yare dabestaniye man (“My grade schoolmate”, or “Schooldays friend of mine”) became very popular with the anti-Shah students in the colleges and universities. Ironically enough, this song like many others later was revived against the Islamic regime by the anti-Islamic revolutionary students.

Schooldays friend of mine

Schooldays friend of mine, you're with me at my side,
A ruler above our heads, you're my scar and my sigh.

Engraved on this blackboard are your name and mine,
Tyranny's welt on our flesh has not faded with time.

The fields of our culture have grown wild with neglect,
Come the good or the bad, people's hearts are now dead.

My hands and yours must tear the weeds away,
Who but you and I can cure our pain?

Schooldays friend of mine, you're with me at my side,
A ruler above our heads, you're my scar and my sigh.

Engraved on this blackboard are your name and mine,
Tyranny's welt on our flesh has not faded with time.
